Cross Flower-Garlanding Workshop in Pino Santo Alto
Details
Cross Decorating Workshop at the AAVV La Caldera community center, Pino Santo Alto, Santa Brígida, Gran Canaria. In May, Santa Brígida joins the celebration of a deeply rooted religious tradition in which crosses, decorated with flowers and broom, adorn paths, squares and mountains, and the neighborhood of Pino Santo Alto also takes part in this festivity. The La Caldera Neighborhood Association of Pino Santo Alto, with the collaboration of the Department of Culture of the Santa Brígida Town Council, is organizing a program of activities for Thursday, April 30. The florist Roja Amapola will give a Cross Decorating Workshop, free and open to all until capacity is reached, which will take place at the AAVV La Caldera community center, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Those interested can register by sending an email to: avlacaldera.pinosantoalto@gmail.com. Tribute to Manuel Sancho In addition, residents of the neighborhood will take part in decorating a Cross in Tribute to Manuel Sancho, an industrial engineer, researcher and disseminator of the cultural and ethnographic heritage of Gran Canaria, as well as a prominent collaborator of the Association and the Santa Brígida Town Council, in recognition of his work in preserving an intangible heritage that had until then received little study. Sancho managed to catalogue, locate and contextualize more than 350 crosses scattered across the island, combining documentary sources, historical press, oral testimonies and fieldwork. He was also the creator of specialized blogs such as Cruces de Gran Canaria and Bibliografía de Senderos – Gran Canaria, where he shared his research, geolocations and stories about the history and meaning of these religious and cultural landmarks, which are closely linked to paths, trails and emblematic places on the island. This collective gesture will culminate with the placement of the Cross on the church façade.
