Poetry – Poetry Slam at the Municipal Library of Santa Brígida, Gran Canaria. You have three minutes as a poet. Do you dare? On May 8 at 6:00 p.m., the Municipal Library of Santa Brígida will become a stage where anything can happen with Poetry Slam, a live poetry event in which each participant has three minutes to set the heart of the room on fire. Poetry against the clock Santa Brígida thus joins the spoken word phenomenon. The format is direct, intense, and with no safety net. Each participant has three minutes to perform an original text on any topic. There can be no background music and no props that might distract. In Poetry Slam, what you say is just as important as how you say it: voice, rhythm, emotion, silences, gestures, eye contact, and stage presence become tools as powerful as metaphors. You are the jury The judges won’t be wearing robes and they won’t be literary experts. The jury will be the audience, people chosen at random from among those present, who will score each performance and decide who advances through the knockout rounds until the winner is declared. Although there is a competitive dynamic, the real prize is not winning, but connecting with other voices. That’s why it doesn’t matter if it’s someone’s first time on stage or if they have a hundred recitals behind them. It doesn’t matter if you sit in the front row or in the back. What matters is being there when poetry happens. How to take part The organizers are already encouraging people to confirm attendance, indicating from which side they want to experience it: as audience or as poet. The event also comes at a special moment for the movement in Gran Canaria. Poetry Slam is currently in a trial season with the aim of becoming the official Poetry Slam Spain venue on the island, which means that starting in the 2026–2027 season it will be able to send its representative to the national championship, taking the voice born in the Canary Islands to compete on the major national stage of performance poetry.
