Theatre — ¡Arriba las que limpian! in the Humanities Assembly Hall, Obelisco Campus, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Next Tuesday, 21 April, in the Assembly Hall of the Humanities Building at ULPGC, the play ¡Arriba las que limpian! will be performed, a theatre piece created and performed by room attendants, cleaners and care workers from Gran Canaria. Except for the work of associations such as Las Kellys, there are no testimonies of how working women have experienced and witnessed the growth of the tourism industry in the Canary Islands, even though this industry has gone so far as to transform their natural environment and to shape both their life projects and those of their descendants, as well as of the people who migrate here to supply labour for this economic sector. The older ones started out in the tomato fields; others left hotels for the restaurant and bar trade. Their stories weave together a narrative that is not usually told at tourism fairs such as Fitur, about how local people have experienced the development and exploitation of tourism in the Canary Islands.
