Internationally renowned jazz singer José James breathes new life into a timeless classic on the 50th anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s I Want You, a celebration of one of the most sensual and innovative albums in the history of music, which will be part of the 35th Canarias Jazz&más International Festival in the Main Hall of the Teatro Pérez Galdós. Written and produced by the legendary Leon Ware for Motown Records, I Want You stands as a landmark of jazz-influenced R&B that has inspired generations of artists, from Prince and D'Angelo to Mary J. Blige, Sade and Kendrick Lamar. James, who collaborated with Leon Ware during the creation of his own genre-defying album No Beginning No End for Blue Note Records, has long cited Marvin Gaye as a guiding inspiration. For him, this project is both a dream and a tribute. “Marvin Gaye is one of my heroes,” James shares. “He had the courage to transform not only his music, but the world around him. His creativity helped all of us discover a deeper meaning of love, and he was not afraid to listen to his spiritual calling. I was blessed to meet and work with Leon Ware before he passed away, and his wisdom was profound. During one of our sessions, Leon told me, ‘You remind me of myself,’ which is the greatest compliment I’ve ever received. This project is a way to give back to both Marvin and Leon, honoring their legacy and the love they shared with the world.” To bring I Want You to life on stage, José James will be joined by Célia Kameni, a singer of prodigious versatility who captivates with her deep tone and her ability to move masterfully between swing, soul and French chanson. He has also assembled a world-class live band featuring guitarist Marcus Machado, pianist Big Yuki, bassist Parker McAllister and drummer Jharis Yokley. This is more than a concert: it is a celebration of love, creativity and the timeless legacy of Marvin Gaye’s I Want You.
